Jazeera seeks answers on Blunkett remark

Reuters - 19 October, 2006

Al Jazeera Channel has demanded an explanation from Britain yesterday of what it called “irresponsible and dangerous” comments by a former British minister on a 2003 US air strike on its Baghdad office.

The network said in a statement it was also consulting its lawyers over the comments by former home secretary David Blunkett on the strike, which killed an Al Jazeera reporter.

Blunkett commented on the incident in an interview with Britain’s Channel Four television aired on Monday.

“I don’t think for a minute in previous wars we’d have thought twice about ensuring that a propaganda mechanism on the soil of the country you were invading would actually continue being able to propagandise against you,” he said, according to a transcript.
