Kuwaiti children's programme accused of propagating stereotypes
Kuwaiti children’s cartoon Bu Qutada wa Bu Nabeel, shown on the Al Watan channel (affiliated to the Kuwaiti newspaper of the same name) sparked outrage by depicting Moroccans in a negative light in August 2010. Depictions include Moroccan policemen extorting bribes from tourists and Moroccan women indulging in witchcraft. The case is particuarly interesting because it highlights ethnic prejudice in the Gulf States towards the population of Morocco. Prejudice towards Moroccans has also been seen recently in Saudi Arabia, after the Saudi government banned Moroccan women from making the pilgrimage to Mecca, in July 2010, on the pretence that they may be prostitutes.
Al Watan promptly issued an apology for any offence caused by the cartoon
